Nike has launched a footwear platform built around delivering sensory stimulation through the feet. The Nike Mind 001 mule and Mind 002 sneaker use 22 independently moving foam nodes underfoot, designed to increase sensory feedback and help athletes feel calmer, more focused, and more present before and after competition.
The shoes launched in January 2026, priced at $95 for the Mind 001 and $145 for the Mind 002.
Neuroscience-backed shoes
Each of the 22 nodes acts like a small piston as the wearer moves, creating changing pressure points across the heel and forefoot. These stimulate mechanoreceptors in the sole of the foot, which continuously send information about pressure, texture, and body position through the nervous system.
Nike describes this as activating sensory areas of the brain. That does not mean the shoes are directly stimulating the brain like an electrical or magnetic neurotechnology device. They are influencing the sensory information reaching it.
The concept was developed by Nike's Mind Science Department, which uses tools including EEG, EMG, pressure mapping, and mobile brain-and-body measurements to study perception and movement.
Does the neuroscience hold up?
The basic mechanism is plausible. Sensory information from the feet plays an important role in balance, posture, and our perception of the body, so deliberately changing that input can affect how movement feels.
The evidence for Nike's stronger focus claims is less clear. Nike has reported changes in sensorimotor brain activity and alpha rhythms while wearing the shoes, but detailed peer-reviewed methods, effect sizes, and controlled performance results have not been published publicly.
