MindSpire is a British company that makes SONA, an ear-worn device for stress regulation. SONA combines transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation with breathing, audio and body monitoring. Sessions are controlled through an app and support calm, sleep and recovery.
How it works
An earpiece delivers mild electrical pulses through the skin to a branch of the vagus nerve in the ear. A pulse sensor monitors heart rate and heart rate variability during sessions. Software uses these signals to adjust stimulation and pair it with paced breathing and sound, creating a personalised feedback process over time.
Key considerations
Response to stimulation varies, and evidence for SONA itself remains limited. Correct placement matters, and stimulation may cause tingling or skin discomfort. People with implanted electronic devices, heart conditions or contraindications need professional advice.
