Carv is a British company in London that sells a digital ski coach. The current product is a pair of small sensors that clip onto the strap of any ski boot in seconds, including rental boots, with no insole or wiring to fit.

How it works

Each sensor holds an accelerometer and a gyroscope. One reads acceleration, the other reads rotation, and combining the two tells the app exactly how each boot moves through a turn. Software scores balance, edge angle and the shape of the turn, returns a single Ski IQ number, and talks the skier through drills over headphones between runs.

Key considerations

The first generation used pressure sensing insoles under the foot and the clip version dropped them. Coaching also sits behind an annual membership on top of the hardware.
