BrainCo is an American neurotechnology company that grew from the Harvard Innovation Lab. Its consumer product, FocusCalm, is a lightweight headband worn across the forehead. It combines brain activity measurement with games, exercises and guided sessions intended to train focus and relaxation.
How it works
Metal contacts on the headband detect tiny electrical signals produced when groups of brain cells communicate. Software filters out movement and other noise, then converts patterns in the signal into a FocusCalm score. The app responds with visual feedback, meditations and exercises that change as the measured level of mental activity changes.
Key considerations
The score is a simplified interpretation of a limited set of brain signals, not a direct measure of attention, stress or emotion. FocusCalm is a training and wellness product, and evidence for lasting benefits remains more limited than evidence for established clinical treatments.
