WHAT THEY MAKE

Akervall Technologies is a Michigan materials company best known for SISU, a range of thin mouthguards for contact sports. The company also makes SOVA guards for teeth grinding at night. Both products are shaped around the teeth at home after being softened in hot water.

How it works

SISU uses impact sensor technology to get instantly informed about hits to the head in order to receive quicker care in case of a risk of traumatic brain injury occuring. Its perforated medical grade material becomes firm after moulding and spreads the force of an impact across a wider area. The openings make it easier to speak, breathe and drink while wearing the guard. If the fit is poor, the material can be reheated and shaped again.

Key considerations

The sensor solely provides information about hits, rather than detecting concussions, monitoring grinding, or tracking oral health. Its protection depends on a correct fit and consistent use.
