Prophetic has launched a headband that claims to induce lucid dreams using ultrasound stimulation of the brain.
The San Francisco startup has opened orders for two devices, Dual and Phase. Both send low-intensity ultrasound through the forehead toward the prefrontal cortex, a brain region associated with metacognition, self-awareness, and some aspects of lucid dreaming.
Dual costs $449 and is expected to begin shipping at the end of 2026. Phase costs $1,299, adds neural sensing and closed-loop stimulation, and is expected to ship in 2027.
Inside the headband
Dual uses two ultrasound transmitters to deliver stimulation through the forehead. Prophetic says the device can increase dream lucidity, recall, perception, and control.
Phase adds more sophisticated ultrasound arrays alongside neural sensors. The company says these signals will allow the device to adjust stimulation based on the user's brain activity in real time.
The underlying technology is transcranial ultrasound neuromodulation. Low-intensity sound waves are focused through the skull and can influence neural activity in targeted areas of the brain. Human research has shown that ultrasound can modulate brain activity under controlled conditions, making it an increasingly active area of neuroscience research.
Prophetic is applying that technology to the prefrontal cortex during sleep.
Can ultrasound induce lucid dreams?
Lucid dreaming occurs when someone becomes aware that they are dreaming while the dream continues. Researchers have studied the phenomenon for decades, including by asking lucid dreamers to signal awareness through predetermined eye movements during REM sleep.
Frontal and frontoparietal brain regions appear to become more active during lucid dreams, providing some rationale for Prophetic's target. That relationship does not establish that stimulating the same region will cause lucid dreaming.
Evidence around dream induction remains limited. A systematic review of lucid-dream induction techniques found that none of the approaches studied could reliably and consistently induce lucid dreams. A more recent review found some promising psychological and pharmacological techniques, but ultrasound has not emerged as an established method.
Prophetic has shared early results covering dream recall, vividness, clear thinking, deliberate choices, and EEG changes after stimulation. There is currently too little public information on the methodology, sample sizes, controls, or effect sizes to treat those results as validation of the product.
The evidence question
Ultrasound neuromodulation itself has a growing research base. A systematic review of human studies found evidence that transcranial ultrasound can alter brain activity, with no severe adverse effects reported across the included studies.
Prophetic now has to demonstrate that its consumer implementation produces the much more specific behavioral effect it advertises.
