Biotia has raised an oversubscribed $9 million financing to expand its genomic infectious-disease testing. The New York company is putting additional focus on providing more diagnostics for women’s health, while also expanding into orthopaedic infections. Beyond that, the funding will also support an expansion of Biotia's laboratory facilities.
Biotia's main consumer-facing product is BIOTIA-ID, a $249 at-home urine test for recurrent and complicated urinary tract infections. The test uses clinical metagenomic sequencing which involves reading microbial DNA directly from urine to identify the organisms that may be causing an infection.
Reading the full microbial signal
Clinical metagenomic testing looks across all genetic material present in a sample instead of searching for a single suspected pathogen. Biotia’s test currently can be used to identify 44 bacteria and fungi associated with UTIs.
Its software compares measured signals with a pathogen database and filters out likely contamination and normal urogenital microbes. Selected antimicrobial-resistance genes are also reported to help clinicians choose treatment.
A 2026 peer-reviewed validation study covering 1,470 urine specimens reported 97.2% sensitivity and 99.6% specificity for the ID test kit. Most authors were affiliated with Biotia, so this remains company-developed clinical validation.
Biotia has separately reported that it could detect a pathogen in 63% of more than 200 samples that had previously returned a negative urine culture.
Expanding through women’s health
Recurrent UTIs give Biotia a clear entry point into women’s health. They disproportionately affect women and can overlap with conditions such as genitourinary syndrome of menopause and bladder-pain disorders, where similar symptoms can make diagnosis difficult.
Biotia has already built out the at-home pathway around the problem. Patients order the test, send the sample to its laboratory and discuss the results through a telehealth partner. Results are typically available within three business days of receipt.
