WHAT THEY MAKE

NextSense is an American company developing brain sensing earbuds for sleep and focus. Its Smartbuds combine audio with in ear electroencephalography and adaptive sound. They are designed to support daytime listening and overnight use.

How it works
Electrodes inside the earbuds detect electrical signals produced by brain activity. At night, software identifies sleep changes and delivers precisely timed sound pulses during deep sleep. They also stream music or spoken audio and use brain feedback for daytime applications. An app presents results and controls audio.

Key considerations
In ear electroencephalography captures less spatial information than a sleep laboratory setup. Fit, ear shape, movement and muscle activity affect signal quality. Sleeping comfortably with earbuds may not suit everyone, and audio can disturb some users. Smartbuds do not diagnose sleep disorders, and independent evidence for long term consumer outcomes remains limited.
