Lura Health, registered as UCHU Biosensors, is an American company in Newark, New Jersey that builds sensors small enough to live on a tooth. The sensor bonds directly to enamel or clips into a retainer, aligner or other dental appliance, and it is being trialled with clinics in Japan.

How it works

Saliva carries chemistry from the whole body, and acidity is the first thing Lura reads. Two contacts sit in the saliva around the sensor, and the voltage between them shifts with how acidic the mouth becomes, which happens sharply after eating and slowly wears at enamel. A second sensor corrects for temperature, and readings travel to a phone over Bluetooth all day.

Key considerations

It is not on sale. The company is working toward United States clearance and has pointed at 2027 as the earliest date.
