Tonal is an American fitness company that makes a wall mounted strength training system. Two arms use cables and handles for exercises, while a screen provides training and feedback.
How it works
Electric motors create resistance through the cables without weight plates. Sensors measure cable length, speed, position and force during repetitions. Software counts repetitions, tracks range of motion and changes resistance during sets. Modes can reduce weight during difficult repetitions, increase resistance during movement or simulate chains and eccentric loading.
Key considerations
Tonal requires professional installation on a suitable wall, enough exercise space and mains power. The hardware and membership create upfront and ongoing costs. Sensors can recognise selected movement patterns but cannot identify every technique problem, injury risk or pain. Maximum resistance and cable geometry may not suit every advanced lifter or exercise. Tonal is a fitness system and not a rehabilitation device.
